What is "Seasoned" firewood?

Seasoning is the process by which firewood goes from "Green" as in fresh, to being "seasoned", or aged and ready to burn. In short, it's the storage of firewood in stacks specifically arranged to encourage airflow and sun exposure for extended lengths of time.

What is necessary for wood to become fully seasoned?

  • The wood being split open, or cut into logs
  • Airflow (proper stacking)
  • Direct sunlight (open air locations)
  • The wood being elevated off the ground
  • Time
  • Final humidity level under 20%

The average seasoning period is anywhere between 9 and 18 months depending on the type of wood. Why such a long time, you ask? It's necessary for the core of the wood to dry out for it to be easy to light, and for the smoke to be mellow and less intense. Many of our customers who camp out in the deserts of Fayoum, Wadi Degla, or other prime camping locations across Egypt are quite pleased with the quality of our firewood saying that it did not create a harsh black smoke, which made them enjoy their time with friends sitting around the fire. That's all thanks to the seasoning process!

How do we do it?

In order to provide superior quality firewood, The Smokebox is involved in the production process from the very beginning. We visit farms interested in clearing acres of trees and take it from there. Proper clearing, transportation, storage, and processing of the woods gives The Smokebox its competitive edge and allows us to provide an unmatched level of quality when it comes to firewood. We guarantee a level of humidity under 20% for any order we send out.
